The String Cheese Incident unveils their new limited edition live release, Trick Or Treat, on October 27, 2009. The timing is fitting, considering the nine-disc box set was culled from a variety of epic SCI "Hulaween" shows. From Atlanta's Variety Playhouse (1998) Philadelphia's Electric Factory (1999), Portland, Maine's State Theatre (2000), New York City (2001), Shrine Auditorium (2002) in Los Angeles, Sin City's Cox Pavillion (2003) and the Exhibition Center @ Alliant Energy Center in Madison, Wisconsin (2004) - Trick or Treat journeys through the years to re-visit some of the band's most classic Incidents from Halloween's past.

This exclusive box set offers seven of SCI's famous Halloween cover sets in their entirety, including String Cheese performing songs by such artists as the Beatles, Beastie Boys, KC & The Sunshine Band, Phish and many others.

Trick or Treat Pre-Order
The String Cheese Incident and SCI Fidelity Records are pleased to announce the Trick or Treat Pre-Order Campaign.

Beginning on September 23, 2009, the first 500 people who order the Trick or Treat Box Set through MusicToday (LINK) will automatically be entered to win one of thirty (30) first prizes. Contest winners will receive an extremely rare, uncut Trick or Treat poster, featuring the Michael Everett cover art poster, plus all 7 mini-posters from the box set. These uncut sheet will also be signed by the members of SCI!

In addition, the first 200 Box Sets ordered will include Everett cover art posters signed by The String Cheese Incident themselves!

Legalize Hemp and Cannabis in California

Hi Family,

"And if my words did glow, with the gold of sunshine. And if my tunes were played on the harp unstrung..." Please help these words to ripple... ripple becomes a wave... wave becomes a tsunami... pretty soon my priests/priestesses are out of jail.

Right now there are two competing signature drives to put Cannabis legalization initiatives on the ballot in California in November 2010.

One is found at www.taxcannabis2010.org

The other is found at www.CaliforniaCannabisInitiative.org

Please look carefully at the text of both laws (the text of each is finalized) and make up your own mind which one you support.

I am supporting www.CaliforniaCannabisInitiative.org because our law will protect Cannabis users from discrimination in

healthcare, employment, and housing. It is a full legalization measure for industrial hemp and recreational cannabis which will restore full human rights to Hemp farmers and Cannabis users all across California. Of course supplying Cannabis to children will remain illegal just as it is today. Driving vehicles under the influence will remain illegal just as it is today. Cannabis users will still be fired from their jobs if they show up to work impaired.

There are two parts to our plan. The first part is to publicly post and personally distribute our "Freedom Lover's Call to Arms" in order to recruit volunteers. This document is available here-

www.imgur.com/dbU83

The second part of our plan is to ask everyone who volunteers to make a pledge for how many signatures they can collect in

the next 30 days or so. 15-30 signatures is a good number. If enough volunteers show this level of commitment we can succeed. You can probably get that number from your family members, friends, co-workers, and neighbors without having to solicit in public too much. This is an "out of the closet" movement. We will have to proudly advocate human rights for responsible, honest, hard-working Cannabis smokers in order to convince legitimate people to support us. I can supply stickers equivalent to each persons pledge number. These stickers can be used to generate interest and be given to voters who sign the petition. Here is the sticker design-

www.imgur.com/2cjvb

Feel free to distribute and use these images. Just don't copyright them.

We have 145 days in order to get the number of signatures that we need. Our petition is hot off the press on 9/11 and we

have started collecting the first signatures yesterday 9/12.

We are polling 56% public support for Cannabis legalization in California which menas that this is an initiative which is not doomed. Its time has finally arrived; we are at the tipping point right now. Now is the time to do this and to do it right. We may only get one chance. If a law which is not exactly what we want is implemented then we may lose our critical mass and our ability to set it right.

I believe that less adults will smoke cannabis after it is legal. This is the case in the Netherlands where it has been

available over-the-counter for 30 years yet only half as many citizens (percentage-wise) smoke as do citizens here. My economics professor has taught for years that prohibition has not succeeded in decreasing usage by increasing penalties. Instead it has destroyed lives and families without substantial benefit to society. After legalization hard-drug usage will decrease due to a "separation of the markets," a decline in the price of Cannabis relative to hard-drugs, and the restoration of honesty and common sense in drug education. Violence, thievery, and the incarceration of honest people will decrease as well. I also believe that a well regulated market will decrease the availability and appeal of cannabis to children. In fact teenage Cannabis use in California has fallen steadily since the passage of Proposition 215. Furthermore the adults who smoke Cannabis after legalization will be better able appreciate the majesty of nature in peace and unity without learning to fear and disrespect authority figures. This will be better for their spirits and better for society. Finally the human rights of legitimate medical Cannabis patients will be better protected than they are today. Legalizing Cannabis will create a safer, healthier, and more humane California for us all to live in.

If you want to help us in any way please contact the CCI campaign at www.CaliforniaCannabisInitiative.org or write me at
deep_space_underground@yahoo.com I give you my encouragement to modify this message if necessary and distribute it to anyone who might help on any forum or by any mechanism.

Love,
-Fully Committed

FREE FESTIVAL- Rythms On The Rio - August 22-23

I wanted to let you know about a free festival we are putting on in South Fork CO, on August 22nd and 23rd 2009.

The festival is called Rhythms On The Rio (www.rhythmsontherio.com).

It will be a free 2 day festival with on-site and local camping. It will be a pass the hat donation based benefit for the Rio Grande Headwaters Land Trust, and the High Valley Community Center for kids, and is being put on by The South Fork Music Association, a non-profit volunteer 501-3C Group.

Headling acts will include the Nershi-Law Trio (formerly Honkeytonk Homeslice) and friends, Great American Taxi, and others. Appearing with Bill and Jill Nershi will be Scott Law, and Darol Anger (plus maybe some other unannounced guests). The Darol Anger Trio, and others, will also appear that
day. On August 23rd 2009, Great American Taxi, Drew Emmitt, Susan Gibson, Pete Kartsounes, and others will also be appearing.

The festival will take place on the grassy banks of the Rio Grande river in the San Juan mountains of South Fork CO (just over Wolf Creek Pass from Pagossa Springs and west of Alamosa in the town of South Fork on highway 160), on August 22nd and 23rd 2009. It is easy to get to, and should be a kind, relaxed, real good time for everyone. Tickets are free, but must be downloaded off of the web site.

Can you please pass the word? Please check out the web site, and if you have any questions or suggestions, please feel free to contact me by email (michael@delibdesigns.com or on tribe). Thanks!
fun and friendship among Deadheads....and John Prine fans

hey folks, in the interests of not polluting some other thread (> snorkle!<) in ths tribe, I am suggesting we start a new topic to be silly if we feel like, talk about what we do when we AREN'T looking for a Dead show, and generally remember that we are humans first, uh duh that I even have to tell anyone that, who happen to like the GD.

anyone who finds this topic threatening for any reason is free to consult the mental health porfessional of their choice.

or to take their favorite psychedelic if your idea of Gpd's mental ehalth day is a debatably legal smile, to paraphrase one of John Prine's most notoriously funny songs, "Illegal Smile."

I have a bunch of work to do today so must beg out now.

it looks lke a gloriously beautiful day at elast in the bay Area, hot over the hill and just warm and syunny enough here right by the Bay...get out and enjoy it, whether your smile is legal, ilelgal, or some of each and somewhere between!

"won't you please tell The Man I didn;t hurt anyone, I was just out to have me some fun."

I'm planning on a little of that too.

Free mystery novel Grateful Dead book available! ( Sponsored by author)

I am Kearney Street Books' publicist. Kearney Street Books is a small, independent publishing house which focuses on books about music. Currently, we are sponsoring free book discussions for Gary McKinney's new mystery novel, "Slipknot." "Slipknot" is a mystery featuring County Sheriff Gavin Pruitt, Deadhead.
Set the year before Jerry Garcia's death, "Slipknot" takes place in picturesque rural Washington, and revolves around the murder of a politically prominent environmentalist - who was going to decide whether a local forest is logged or not. The future of the local logging industry is dependent upon the decision - but so are the lives of the wildlife within the forest.
Gavin must figure out who the killer is, all the while quoting classic Grateful Dead songs, taking up jamming sessions, and dealing with his daughter's new "hippie" boyfriend.
If you are interested in learning more about "Slipknot," there are limited free copies available. If enough people are interested, a discussion group can be started.
This isn't spam - we just want to get the word out about a great book featuring the Grateful Dead. Since the music can be downloaded for free, why not allow the same in literature - except this offer is available for a limited time.
(Again, this isn't spam - there will only be a few offers made at similar sites devoted the Dead or their new bands)
You can also read the entire first chapter of "Slipknot" for free at Kearney Street Books' website, kearneystreetbooks.com
This book is available for ANYBODY. All we ask is that if you like the book, please do some promotion for it - guerrilla marketing style. We are a small, independent business and we would just like you to tell friends, blog a post about it, put a review on amazon.com, or whatever you have time for.
Thank you so much. You can contact me here or at msclement@yahoo.com

Like last year, Another Planet Entertainment plans to displace San Franciscans and visitors from Golden Gate Park. For about two weeks San Franciscans and visitors are getting kicked out of huge portion of GGP by a private entity so that it can make a profit. Chunks of time and space like this are going to add up quickly. Say good bye to the artists, musicians, athletes, fauna, and so in Speedway Meadows and hello to the Walmart greeter ....

When
21 AUG -- 3 SEPT 2009 (and in 2010--2013)

21st Ave -- 44th Ave: Most of the West End of GGP: Polo Fields, Speedway, Lindley, Marx, Little Speedway Meadows, and the connective areas

Whom
All unauthorized users

How
Chain--link fencing

What to Do
Spread the word about our loss of access to GGP, the displacement of fauna, and the destruction of flora by letter, word of mouth, phone, email, text, etc.

Call your supervisor: 554-5184; 554-5163 (fax); 554-5227 (TTY)

OT posting : Outside Lands concert: Last post

Previously, I made a post about the Outside Lands concert.

I imagined that it might be interesting to some in this group since the Outside Lands concert is the exact opposite of the concerts held in the good old days of the Dead.

Apparently, some in this group are not interested. So, after this I wont post here anymore.

Perhaps, though, a handful were interested .... so I leave the info below .... and wish for you a nice summer.

FYI

Golden Gate Park Closure

Chain Link Fences on Public Property?

Community Meeting County Fair Building 9th Ave at Lincoln Way Thurs, July 23, 7pm

With a helping hand from all the Supervisors and Recreation and Park, a private, for profit company will close about one third of GGP for about 2 weeks: 21 Aug -- 3 Sept 2009.

To prevent lawsuits and a loss of revenue, and to thereby maximize its profit, Another Planet Entertainment will install miles of chain link fence which will stop you from intruding into the Polo Fields, Speedway, Lindley, Marx, Little Speedway Meadows, and the adjacent areas, where you follow your routine, e.g., walking, sitting, running, biking, 太極拳, योग.

If you are concerned about keeping public parks open and accessible; preserving the quality of life in SF; the way certain public servants are destroying public parks to save public parks; the disruption of your routine by a private company, so that it can maximize its profit; the displacement of the fauna and the destruction of the flora of GGP; and other issues in re to the Outside Lands Music Festival, e.g., the disdainful lengthening of the duration of the concert despite wide spread resident complaints, parking, etc. please speak up at the meeting above and/or call your supervisor: 554-5184; 554-5163 (fax); 554-5227 (TTY).

Desert Rocks!!!!

Hey out there!

Just wanted to see who is going to Desert Rocks Music Festival in May?? I heard from friends who went last year that it was AMAZING--I am lucky enough to have visited Moab, UT before, and I can't even imagine the beauty of having a music festival there... The landscape itself is breathtaking (check out some of the pics and footage), and then to think of all the FUN (aka PARTY!) of having people throw down in the desert with friends and great music, yeah!

Tickets are really reasonable (they're only $95 for the whole weekend), they have a Web site with all the info: www.desertrocks.org

And the line-up is sick too, with ALO, The Mother Hips, Hot Buttered Rum, The Motet (and the return of magicgravy, my favorite!), Billy Nershi from SCI is going to be there, and my friends from SF, Big Light...and a bunch more, you can see the full line-up on the Web.

Anyway, just thought I would throw it out there--the festival is May 22-24, in Moab, UT, over Memorial Day Weekend--what a ROCKIN way to spend a 3-day weekend!!!

Here's a cool video I found about last year's fest: http://www.desertrocks.org/desert-rocks-2009-teaser.html

And here's a fun pic from someone who went last year, I can't wait to cheers to it too!

See ya there!!!!!!
Help me identify a GD track

Hey. There is an early (I believe) Dead track, probably late '60s to 1970 vintage, that has an exquisite gentle psychedelic instrumental passage that I've heard a couple times on the radio... program directors or hosts just choosing maybe 20 seconds of it. It sounds maybe like an aural interpretation of the gradual opening of a complex flower - like HEARING the musical analog of watching a time-lapse movie of a blossom opening and developing.

The track has no driving rhythm. It's not rock-y or bluesy at all and is just an incredible use of electric instruments doing something beautiful and abstract and totally involving.

It may be a portion of one of those tracks on which the Dead did exploratory passages (like Dark Star or The Other One), but if so it's not much like the versions I've heard so far.

I realize my description may be pretty intangible and subjective, but can anyone give me some clues? Please include the name of the album/CD if you take a stab at naming the track. Thanks for running the question through your memories.

Rainbow Druid/Deadhead looking for his Rainbow Earth Mama

About Me:
I would love to meet someone who could be a lifetime companion, to thrive together. I love learning and engaging with people and am a bit of an idealist/dreamer.

Living life fully rooted in a state of joy, love and abundance rocks.
I dont feel like I am looking, but I am open. I am just so busy enjoying a full life that I have been in a state of contentment. Loving myself well helps of course.
I am open for a goddess to come and sweep me off my feet and lead me off on various adventures.

I am obsessively creative and led by intuition. I am a craftsman and a performer.

I am led by spirit and a desire to propagate love in the world. I believe in magic. Not just the, wow, that was neat! kind, but the lets change the weather so It is safe to drive kind. I'm sure you know what I mean. I live in a sanctuary surrounded by a cathedral created by nature. I worship here daily. I am a Druid.

I enjoy the fullness of life in all its flavors and am comfortable with my place in it. I love the experience of being human. I live for blackberry splinters, sore backs and orgasms, the moments of hedonism and self-sacrifice, the awkward moments as much as the shining ones. Life is for living and I am hands on. I am deeply committed to the people that I love. I am far from perfect and have a strong desire to continue to grow.

What I'm Looking For:
This time 'round I am manifesting a spectacular relationship experience. I am looking for a nice clear sign of immediate connection. I am amused anticipating how you are reading this and that you know that I am writing just for you. Its amazing that we haven't met before considering our geographical proximity.
I am eagerly anticipating being impressed by your strength and presence. Creativity oozes from you like some delicious intoxicating perfume. You are a woman who devours life in huge mouth watering hunks. You are wise enough to know that problems are opportunities. You are fluent in the language of humor and silliness. You are competent, self confident and healthy. You already know how beautiful and strong you are. You expect the adoration that a goddess of your stature deserves.
I see that I am calling you out. yes you. You are ready for an unconventionally wonderful relationship. This is not a cop-out for monogamy, but a realization that we are both powerful people with much to do in the world. We can love our lives, together sometimes, apart others. Our relationship does not require close proximity to feel secure. We know that if our beloved is out in the world, then the world is benefiting from their light.

I'm drawn to women who are intellectually curious and engaged, kind and caring about others and the world, wanting to enjoy all of what life has to offer, open-minded; someone who respects herself and others deeply. It would be cool if we could connect spiritually also (I am a practicing Druid within ADF).

P.S.
Looking to manifest a School bus and settle some land and do the Festies & Rainbow gatherings during the the summer.
You willing to rough it Rainbow style?

You can message me here or email me at gypsyvillalobos@yahoo.com

Multiple crispy recordings from all shows so far from Greensboro through second night Worcester. I expect last nights show in Buffalo to be up shortly. Pretty decent sets so far. Lots of stuff coming out of the deep past (alligator, cream puff war, ripple, st. stephen). Looks like anything can happen. I'm getting really excited for my show on the 9th.

Former Grateful Dead Keyboardist Merl Saunders Dies

Former Grateful Dead Keyboardist Merl Saunders Dies

Keyboardist Merl Saunders, a longtime collaborator with the Grateful Dead and Jerry Garcia Band, died this morning at Kaiser Hospital in San Francisco after complications from a stroke. Saunders was 74.

Saunders suffered a stroke six years ago and lost the use of one of his hands and his ability to speak, but remained active in Bay Area music circles. “Boy, did he get the most out of what he had left,” Grateful Dead drummer Mickey Hart told the Marin Independent Journal.

Saunders grew up in San Francisco, playing the piano by ten and later graduated to the Hammond B-3 under the careful tutelage of the legendary Jimmy Smith. In 1970 began playing with Garcia in “Legion of Mary” and then “Garcia/Saunders,” producing a number of popular albums including the Deadhead favorite Live at the Keystone. Their 1990 collaboration, Blues from the Rainforest, hit the Billboard Top 10. Saunders also contributed to the Dead’s album Grateful Dead in 1971. Later, he became known as a senior member of the jam band scene having played with Phish, Blues Traveler and Widespread Panic, earning him the title “Godfather of Jam Bands.” Saunders also worked as a jazz trio player, performing and recording with Harry Belafonte, Frank Sinatra, Lionel Hampton, Miles Davis, B. B. King, Bonnie Raitt, and Paul Butterfield.

“Despite having lost one side of his body to the stroke and being unable to speak, Merl lit up rooms with his smile and spirit” said longtime Grateful Dead publicist and band historian Dennis McNally. “And despite physical damage he put out more sweetness than anyone could imagine. He was a giant soul, and I will remember his smile, at the Greek Theatre tribute to Jerry Garcia a few years back as he played one handed with Melvin Seals. I’ll remember that smile forever.”

Somewhere...out there... is a picture of me inside a Dead show. You and I had never met, but you asked to take my picture and said you would mail it. It was '93 or '94-ish and probably in Eugene, Oregon. I was a girl in my very early 20s, with long curly brown hair, and probably wearing a pink peasant top and a Guatemalan wide-brimmed hat. Do you have that picture? I've wondered about it for years. There are absolutely no pictures of me on tour, since I was staunchly opposed to film back then (being from the polluted town where Kodak made film will do that to you).

This Friday we're hosting a "Jerry Garcia Birthday Bash" at 12 Galaxies in SF featuring live music from one of the hottest and most talented, up-and-coming bluegrass bands around - Montana Slim. They'll play two sets of rollicking good fun their "SF grass" music interspersed by sets of all things related Jerry Garcia and the Grateful Dead for your dancing enjoyment.

We'll also have long-time friends, family, special guests, video and more... So kick-off the Jerry Day 2008 weekend by celebrating the life of Jerry Garcia in his hometown neighborhood of San Francisco's Mission District (and feel free to bring a cake!).

$1 of every ticket sold goes to benefit "Jerry Day 2008"

We'll open the night with an encore version of very rare video from 1975 of Jerry on a Catholic TV program called "Miracles". Father Miles Riley conducts a very insightful and entertaining interview of a vibrant Jerry Garcia in his prime ("Blues For Allah"/"Legion of Mary" era). If you haven't seen this video before, this you don't want to miss. It lasts about 35 minutes and we'll start it shortly before 9pm.

Friday is also long-time Grateful Dead manager/author Rock Scully's birthday. We want to wish Rock a Happy Birthday too!

Hope to see y'all there!
Cubensis and fans trashed by Easy Reader reviewer

A personal message from Craig Marshall

I'd like you to read something, probably the most vile piece of "scumbag journalism" I've ever seen.

In the South Bay Easy Reader, reporter "Ryan Beachkofski" wrote a review of our recent show at the Lighthouse, in which he denegrates Cubensis, the music of the Grateful Dead, and worst of all, he rants rudely and insultingly about you, the fans.

It's shocking, actually, to think that any one person would stoop to writing such trash, whether he liked the band or not. This man, (who is not listed as a staffer) even has the gall to put down others in his profession who have written good reviews of the band.

In fact, you can't really call his drivel a "review" because he doesn't critique our performance, but rather he hurls insults and assults the dignity of our faithful fans while maliciously tearing into our performance and your attendance. It's unbelievable!
Read this garbage and see what you think

Here's what he wrote:

Live Music Review
Cubensis
by Ryan Beachkofski
Published June 19, 2008 in the Easy Reader

Cubensis, a self-proclaimed Grateful Dead uber-tribute band, needs an editorial kick in the hemp shorts for three specific reasons:

First, a band could be the finest tribute band on earth with the ability to cover trademarked songs from the originators without a glitch or misstep. Fine. I have no argument that Cubensis may play Grateful Dead music to undeniable perfection. I wouldn't even know because I race to the tuner every time I hear one of the hillbilly heroin-induced-wannabe-jazz car crashes make it to air play.

Secondly, I just don't get it.

Finally, I feel that Cubensis' following is bad for business.

It's a shocker, I know. But Cubensis has a 40-member hard core following that heels when the band comes a calling. Every band wishes for that blessing and every house booking agent knows that phenomenon is too good to turn away.

The standard envelope for four sets of anything, no matter the number of members in a band, is $300 flat, unless the band has a name or an in-pocket following that plans to buy drinks. Cubensis asks for north of $1K.

After my 10-minute punishment that put me in front of this band, I realized a few things about their groupies:

1) You're not helping the cause of saving water by refusing to shower. You only contribute to methane gas emissions that cause global warming. 2) Is it absolutely necessary to immediately remove your flip flops when entering an establishment that serves food and drink? And 3) don't show up high. That's what the bar is for. Pony up those few pieces of silver and buttons you keep in that silly pouch you made from hemp rope and sunshine and invest in some commerce.

I took note from a reliable source after leaving the musical water boarding and asked the employee of another club about this band and its following: "You're right about the asking price and the patronage. They want a thousand bucks and the hippies don't spend a dime on drinks. The band gets the take at the door and we get left with bupkis and hours of mopping up after the blackfoots."

In essence, I don't care if Bill Walton and the other hundreds of thousands of VW van-driving bad dancers see color in the music. I am utterly disappointed in my colleagues that inscribe "Cubensis plays with the same laid-back mastery as the Real McCoy."

That is just plain promotional banter for hire.

Cubensis is just an extension of the original Grateful Dead, whose music drove me to madness at UCSB (where the free-range Dead Heads account for the lingering odor of BO and patchouli oil). If you love it, great, please keep it to yourself. I, on the other hand, will practice my civic duty and choose not to choose. And get your carbon monoxide billowing vans a tune up. Forget "Saving the Rainforest," as your bumper sticker denotes. Save oxygen by getting that piece of #$@%! off the road. ER
--------------------------------------------------

Wow! I ask you, how does that make you feel, to read this hateful, intolerant attack on our scene in general and our fans in particular? I'm sickened, and incensed that this poisonous rubbish was allowed to be published. It harms our reputation, it might very well cost us business, it defames our faithful fans and likens our performance to a torture session.

I've read many a review of Cubensis shows by reputable, sincere journalists; most are favorable, some aren't, but this goes way too far! This hostile and possibly libelous smear campaign is not even a true review of our show! As he says, he only stayed 10 minutes, and barely acknowledges the music other than to rant about how much he has disliked it for years. This is not a review, it's a personal and very negative attack on all of us.

Those that know me also know that I rarely get angry...but this is different. I want to strike back and protest against this sickening and unacceptable criticism, and I hope you'll join me.

If you're as shocked as I am, I'm asking you to take a moment and express your feelings to several editors at the Easy Reader newspaper. I think a retraction is in order; you may have other, better responses, which I encourage.

You might mention how much you enjoy the performances, especially at the Lighthouse, and how Grateful Dead music has made your life more enjoyable, and how offended you are by the reporter's depiction of those in attendance.

There's several ways to respond:

1. Click here to see the story as it appeared, with a box at the end of the article to send a letter to the editor;
2. Email publisher Kevin Cody by clicking kcody@easyreader.info ;
3. Email entertainment editor Bondo Wyszpolski by clicking
entertainment@easyreader.info .
4. Write the reporter directly (he's too gutless to provide his email address) addressed to:
Ryan Beachkofski
c/o Easy Reader
PO Box 427
Hermosa Beach, CA 90254
5. Call the Easy Reader, ask for an editor and politely but firmly express your displeasure: 310.372.4611.

To the extent that you are able to participate in this, I want to thank you. You might think that this idiot's opinion is not worth getting upset about, but I think it's important for us to stick up for things we believe in and enjoy.

I'm outraged by this "reporter's" despicable opinion, and this is my own personal response to being maligned.
I am really starting to get to a point where I like the really spacey jams more than anything else. can anyone suggest. some other bands or types of music that are really spacey. I've been trying out some goa and some ambient that seems pretty cool. or I someone could turn me on to some sort of compilation of all greatful dead drums and space. thanks

Hola, is anyone buying the "road trip" series?

When I saw this coming out I thought about changing my position on the value of complete shows--I had not even realized what a purist snob I had become thanks to all the online shows...And stuff like the Complete Winterland--which I bought with no questions asked.

But Highlights of Fall'77, Maybe...I mean why not continue with the Dick's Picks format? or the Audio Only Downloads they were doing a while back...I really doubt Rhino expects to make much money from these releases--why not continue the existing series?

Thanks, David S

Check out the new Grateful Dead Timeline interface on setbreakmusic.com.

Browse through 1,500 SBD & Matrix recordings and listen to any show. Filter by date/location or enter a song title in the full-text search box.

Select a show to see the setlist and click on the "listen" icon to launch the music player.

Most shows include song lyrics and performance-specific notes ("bobby on acoustic", "final version", "santana opened").

Let me know if you come across a show that doesn't play and I'll take it off the list.

At least this one is. All the remaining boys got together save for Kreutzmann who was in Hawaii but sent his best wishes and agreed with the rest of the band to endorse Barack Obama. He already had my vote as I went to the polls before I read this article but this surely would have made me feel even better about checking the name of Obama for the nomination.

Tito and his alter ego Duttyrock has been banned for being haters. The tribe has been placed on Moderator status till further notice till the Trolls get bored and get entrenched in some other tribe being a hater. For those who feel my banning him wash harsh, too bad. I saw no reason to allow a hater to be a member of a Tribe of people he hates and insults all the time. That would be like me being a Pagan joining a Christian Tribe and bashing them. That wouldn't be cool so I won't tolerate Tito or any other trolls to come into this tribe and insult you.

Now go and play nice.

P.S. I did leave Tito's list of recommended shows thread up cause well I have to agree there are some good shows there. Now I'm going to return to reading my book & listening to Yonder. Have fun kids. Oh and happy Solstice and for those Xtians, Have a nice Xmas.

Here is what I loved about the Dead scene and Dead Heads.

We, or I should say the LARGE majority of Dead Heads were compassionate and accepted each other.
I don’t know how many times I would be dancing away and all of a sudden I would caught the worst stench of body odor. I would look around and you could easily tell where it was coming from. While I would do what I could to eliminate the smell from my area either by moving a bit or creating a new smell, I would never think unkindly of the person, I would only be put off by their smell.
It is a totally different feeling than now when I go to a concert and some one has on strong after shave or perfume, I now look around and think who is wearing so much of that stuff and I must admit thinking negative thoughts.
I just thought it interesting the difference of mindsets between being in the dead scene and in ordinary life. And then thinking deeper shouldn’t everyday be like the Dead head days?

In over 150 shows I only saw one fight, which was one punch, and he went running out of embarrassment.

What got me thinking about this was, we had a situation or person who made comments about his taste of the Dead. If you read what he writes he does know his music, unfortunately he doesn’t’ have the skills in life to communicate politely with others and respect their views. Just because you don’t like how something smells don’t call them apiece of shit. I viewed the sticky hippies dancing next to me as a happy dead head that didn’t believe in hygiene the same way I did. I never made a comment to the person, and probably if I did it in a polite way he would have moved. Being a taper, It was hard for me to get up and move, plus if they had of moved I would have offered to send him some tapes for free. BUT if I had of got upset and told him to move, well that’s how normal life is and how problems come up… as we just saw lately.

I am so grateful for that day I first went to the Grateful Dead. I didn’t know their music before I went, I only knew “Trucking” and I thought they were a hard rock band. At that time my favorite band was “Suicidal Tendencies” and other thrash skater bands. BOY did my life and musical taste change on a dime. As they said the bus came by and I grabbed a seat. And when I met the Bear, lets just say, I dove head first down the rabbit hole.

Dead Heads got to experience something that never will be recreated again.
Those were some of the most magical and life changing days of my life.

The Pineapple guys

On to more fun topics
I’m putting together a website / book about my days with the Dead and Mr. Bear. All our adventures took place on the West Coast and Europe. I’m now searching for information about stuff that went on amongst dead heads.

I believe this was a West coast thing.
I’m looking for information about the “Pineapple guys”.
They would walk around inside of the venue before the show passing out pineapple. I only personally saw them once, and didn’t make it over to get any pineapple. I was taking care of the bear.
The story I have is pineapple is a welcome gift.

I would like more information about them and another story I was told about them.
I was told they were the ones who taped up the many strips of colored paper with mixed up letters all over the walls of the arena and venue. The story goes on that the guys would give you a paper telling how to decode the messages.

Anyone remember the paper or the pineapple guys?

Good lord--I had not listened to anything from this period in a while (I have been mostly listening to official releases).

this show completely smokes, but what blows my mind is that the set list is not all that impressive. Sure a Lost Sailor > Saint of Circumstance is always an treat, and there just are not enough Brother Esau's, but really there is nothing on paper that even comes close to predicting how powerful this show is in its entirety. By the time we wind all the way over to Morning Dew it has been quite a ride.

Apparently, I need to revisit the 80's.

Thanks, David S

Is the Grateful Dead a "country band"???

People ask me that alot! hahaha

I guess if you only heard "Working Man's Dead" you might think they are a bit "country". I like to think of them as a BLUES band and NOT country. As much as I love to hear them jam(electric), I love to listen to the mellow side. Sort of like Hot Tuna. I love that band also.

What other good "country-like" bands do you like?

CUBENSIS a GARCIA approved recreation experience

Hey there,

I was surfing the tribes and thought you might want to join my tribe for the band Cubensis cause if your into music ( why I'm asking cause it seems you are) then you'll dig the sounds of Cubensis the only Jerry Garcia approved Grateful Dead tribute act.

The group has its craft so well refined that even members of the Grateful Dead themselves, such as keyboardists Vince Welnick and Tom Constanten, have appeared on stage and performed with these live music interpreters. Dead rhythm guitarist Bob Weir praised the band, saying, “Just love what you do...and of course, you do!”

The band doesn't reproduce the Grateful Dead's songs note for note---though it would be hard for most listeners to tell. The Dead's music is highly improvisational, with rock, country and jazz influences. Cubensis members say there's room for interpretation while staying true to the original. “It’s all about tapping into the same inspirational flow,” says Cubensis guitarist Craig Marshall. Dead guru Jerry Garcia granted Marshall permission to recreate the Dead’s music, as long as he "did a good job" of it. “I told him we played all Grateful Dead songs,” recounts Marshall, to which Garcia replied, in mock surprise, “Oh yeah? So do we!”

So come join the Cubensis tribe and celebrate thier 20th year anniversary http://tribes.tribe.net/cubensisband

The Whitney in NY is doing a Summer Of Love movie series with all sorts of hippie films. Robert Nelson's movie is included:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K2fm-YjB5Sw

This has some of the most classic early Dead images I know of -- Phil running out from between his amps, the Band in a sunk canoe, etc--as well as a smoking version of Aligator. It closes with a Pigpen images I will never forget.

Thanks, David S

Sooo...what do you think?

I for one am very very happy with this release--I had not been listening to all that much fo the Pigpen era shows lately & it was a nice suprise to be reminded of how incredible talented he was.

I think that the Truckin' opening is really inspired--I wish that they had left that song in the first set more often--what a GREAT Way to start a show.

The Jamming on the end of the second disk is also fantastic--I think sound quality may have something to do with that--I can really hear what each member is doing--but also Bobby and Phil hold back a lot which allows Jerry ample room for exploration.

A good release in my opinion--lets hope we do not have to wait as long for Volume Four!

Thanks, David S

at McLaren Park in SF. JGB will be playing.

A Season In Hell #13: Theme From A Season In Hell

Sometimes I get nostalgic. I moved a lot in my life, an average of once every two years. I went to ten schools in thirteen years (K-12), and the one thing that was a constant was music. Music and TV. The two things that were constant were music and TV. And family. The three…three things that were constant were music, TV, family and the ever increasing amount of sarcasm that made it into my humor.

I made it down for the weekly KFJC (http://kfjc.org) staff meeting this past week, for the first time in about seven years. I’m hoping to do a show a month there. I’ll keep you posted.

With that I bring you this latest episode. If you’re a fan of nighttime police dramas, then you’ll enjoy this show.

Also, I recently saw Radio Moscow play 12 Galaxies in SF (http://www.12galaxies.com/flash.html). Check out their MySpace page, and support live music. I also have a few San Francisco artists in this show, including punk polka faves Polkacide, the Japanese yodeling cowboy Toshio Hirano, and Sesame Street cover band Cookie Mongoloid; you’ve never heard anything like them before.

Long time Deadhead has rockin' podcast

http://johnhell.podomatic.com

No Dead this week, but I've got hundreds of shows.

A Season In Hell #12: Waiting for the Man

***Warning*** Because of the need for server space, I will be removing Episode #1 and possibly #2 by Thursday, August 2nd, 2007. You have been warned.

I spent a year in DC last week. I was there for an education conference, and I had the luxury of seeing the New York Dolls perform at the legendary 9:30 Club. The club has been open since the 70’s, but obviously in a very different location. What a great club; amazing sound and stage. The Dolls were incredible too. Only Sylvain and Johanson are alive from the original lineup, but the rest of the band seriously kicked ass. They have a new CD out, go get it.

I got to walk “The Mall”, which is the federal gov’t area. Quite impressive, even if you don’t like the schmuck who lives in the white house right now.

This week I include some early NY Dolls. I also have some live tracks from Tom Waits with the Kronos Quartet doing the theme to my favorite show: “The Wire”. If you haven’t seen this great police drama on HBO, you’re missing the best written show on TV. Some live Lou Reed shows up near the end of the podcast today. A real rarity is included in the guise of Neil Young. He never released “Chrome Dreams”, but all of the music made it on to something eventually. This version of “Powderfinger” never did.

I hope you enjoy the show. Please leave a comment on the website: http://johnhell.podomatic.com and tell your friends about thee show by clicking the “send to friends” link on the page.

Thanks.

John Hell

I'm, just saying, I'm new to this tribe and I know alot of people missed out on getting some good music when GDP only offered 10,000 copies of this set. I ordered it early enoughtthat I also got the bonus disk, so actually, it's 11 disks from the 1969 run of shows at the fillmore west. If anybody is interested, msg me.

An entity has informed me that posting these shows could be a problem for me. So, before I remove them, I would like to offer them to any one who might be interested. From now on I will be trading via USPS. Also, if you have an old tape that sounds like crap, but you just love that show, PM me and we can work something out. I will be removing all Dead shows next weekend which should allow enough time to DL all the shows if you haven't already. All shows from SBD and digitally remastered.

So, I'm downloading Cornell 77 and I decide to look for a few others that be good. Well archive has this feature where you can choose shows by date, or rating. I hit ratings to see what might come up.....some really sick fuckin' shows and one that stuck out, but I had never heard of, was Boston Garden, 5-7-1977. Soundboard, no less! If Cornell is legendary, there are no words to describe this show. From beginning to end I have had shivers all over my body.....un----fuckin---believable---I think I'm having a flashback, and a good one at that!! Jerry's voice is butter---PERFECT! The music couldn't be tighter. I'm fucking ecstatic *screams until voice cracks*
Subject: Boston Garden 5/7/77

I was 23 when I attended this show. We sat behind the stage in clear view of the boys. They played facing each other most of the time, and seemed to enjoy it better than any one at the Garden that night. That night was always a highlight I my life.
If I had a time machine ..this would be my first stop. Every time I listen to this show I still get a chill. 1977 was when the Dead peaked...and this could possibly be there best show that year!!
AAA sound quality and great show, Mississippi Half-Step is off the charts.
Listening to this show will spiritually transform your life. I can't even imagine what it must have been like to actually be there! My flesh would have melted off like in the first Indiana Jones movie. My oh my!
Subject: Dream Show

This was my 2nd Deadshow after one in NYC and I was 17. Took my younger sister and we both remain dedicated to the Dead to this day. I never dreamed I would hear such a crisp and vibrant version of the show. (My 1st show in 1977..last in 1995)Of all recordings in this time frame?..this one blows the best into the yonder!!! Thanks from my entire family!!
Thanks Rob E. for everything you do! Recreating the GD experience like no one else, playing the music PERFECTLY, AND remixing this amazing show into a perfect clean mix. Its a bird, its a plane, no its bobby! No he's SUPER-HEAD!

This is the show I have listened to over and over. Bertha starts off a little unsure-is it gonna happen tonight?- then Keith hammers on the piano- the entire mood picks way up- Get this one and all others - including tomorrow night's extravaganza- shall pale in the comparison. My unhesitating vote for the bestest first set ever, from any band, anywhere, anytime. ENJOY!
Subject: killer show,sound,crowd,...

This is probably the best show, as far as everything, I have in my collection. The sound quality is perfect. WATCH OUT ->some of these other dowloads dont have the entire show!! This one dose (oops!) does.
Something else to say about this jewel, the entire show is represented here. There are no skips between the songs when the band was "getting ready" for the next song. You hear a little of the crowd screaming in-between songs for them to hurry, but they always took their time. You can close your eyes and get the real sense that you are there. Listening to this I am confronted with those familiar chords while they were working out the beginning of the next song. Everybody would start guessing on what the next song was going to be and the "winner" was the one who figured it out first. What a great time.

My suggestion, get this, play it without looking at the set list, close your eyes, sit on the floor or stand in front of the stereo, fade back, sway, dance, sing, smile, smile, smile.

Reviewer: jamall - - February 19, 2005
Subject: Excellent Job

on the mix here. I had a "tired" Betty C. board that was many generations old. I still played it, b/c in a year of 5 star shows, this one has to be in the top 5. The first set alone is just amazing.
Probably the best "Music" I've ever heard. I know there are other great ones...I would not be surprised to see this as a DP, despite the popularity of next evening's show.

Thanks

6 Stars to Mr. Eaton & Co. for the production work.

I hope that when the time is right some other 77 shows might get a proper going over as far as re-mastering goes. 6/9/77 etc...

A must have for any collector.
Subject: Choose this source.

In my humble ears opinion...
This new source sounds much cleaner than the more frequently used muddy Betty board source.

Have a listen for yourself.

A fabulous upgrade to a fabulous show. Superb work by Rob Eaton in re-dbx-decoding the primary source that clears up the thudding low end on the original WBOTB? source with much better overall clarity. Excellent finish work by Wiz in blending the Aud patches, cleaning up rough spots and providing the U.S. Blues encore in the alternate SBD source. A must-have for any collector.

Ithaca Mayor Declares May 8 Grateful Dead Day

The Scoop: >
> Ithaca — In honor of the 30th anniversary of one of the Grateful
> Dead's most legendary performances that took place on May 8, 1977 at
> Cornell University's Barton Hall, Ithaca Mayor Carolyn Peterson will
> declare May 8, Grateful Dead Day in Ithaca.
>
> The headlining event of this anniversary celebration is Dark Star
> Orchestra's recreation of the Legendary May 8, 1977 Grateful Dead
> concert.
>
> The Mayor's Proclamation is as follows:
>
> Proclamation from the Mayor of the City of Ithaca
>
> Whereas, the Grateful Dead have been recognized by many highly
> credible organizations, individuals and entities including the Rock &
> Roll Hall of Fame as significantly important and integral to the
> musical and social fabric of our contemporary culture, and
>
> Whereas, on May 8th, 1977 the Grateful Dead performed in Barton Hall
> on the campus of Cornell University in the city of Ithaca New York, a
> concert that is widely acknowledged and regarded as a defining and
> transcendent occasion and example of the art of contemporary musical
> improvisation, collaboration, musicianship, and performance, and
>
> Whereas, many tens of thousands of individuals who were not in
> attendance that night in Barton Hall, have become knowledgeable &
> familiar with the extraordinary nature of the performance on May 8th
> 1977 through the trading and sharing of recordings of the show, and
>
> Whereas, the cultural identity and perceptions of Ithaca as a
> community, have been informed and bolstered by the widespread
> acknowledgement of the magic of May 8th, 1977, and
>
> Whereas, it has been said many times by many people that, "there is
> nothing like a Grateful Dead concert",
>
> Now therefore, be it resolved that as Mayor of the City of Ithaca,
> and in heartfelt recognition of the thirtieth anniversary of the May
> 8th 1977 concert performance, I declare May 8th 2007 as Grateful Dead
> Day in the City of Ithaca.

New to the forum, glad to see there's still plenty of Dead Heads around. I toured in the late '80s/early 90's. Anybody from that "generation" still around?

Hey everybody, I'm pretty new to Tribe and a born-again Deadhead. I followed the band in the early 90s and have been reconnecting with the music over the past few years. Now I would like to reconnect with some friends, new and old if any of you are out there.
Blessings...
