I am Kearney Street Books' publicist. Kearney Street Books is a small, independent publishing house which focuses on books about music. Currently, we are sponsoring free book discussions for Gary McKinney's new mystery novel, "Slipknot." "Slipknot" is a mystery featuring County Sheriff Gavin Pruitt, Deadhead.
Set the year before Jerry Garcia's death, "Slipknot" takes place in picturesque rural Washington, and revolves around the murder of a politically prominent environmentalist - who was going to decide whether a local forest is logged or not. The future of the local logging industry is dependent upon the decision - but so are the lives of the wildlife within the forest.
Gavin must figure out who the killer is, all the while quoting classic Grateful Dead songs, taking up jamming sessions, and dealing with his daughter's new "hippie" boyfriend.
If you are interested in learning more about "Slipknot," there are limited free copies available. If enough people are interested, a discussion group can be started.
This isn't spam - we just want to get the word out about a great book featuring the Grateful Dead. Since the music can be downloaded for free, why not allow the same in literature - except this offer is available for a limited time.
(Again, this isn't spam - there will only be a few offers made at similar sites devoted the Dead or their new bands)
You can also read the entire first chapter of "Slipknot" for free at Kearney Street Books' website, kearneystreetbooks.com
This book is available for ANYBODY. All we ask is that if you like the book, please do some promotion for it - guerrilla marketing style. We are a small, independent business and we would just like you to tell friends, blog a post about it, put a review on amazon.com, or whatever you have time for.
Thank you so much. You can contact me here or at msclement@yahoo.com

  • dont know if it is still available but i would love to get a copy if it is. please send me details letting me know thanks declan
    • I've read it, and bought a copy for a friend, after hearing the author on Davod Gan's "dead to the WOrld" fundraiser special on KPFA a couple years ago.

you can still buy it on line through the publisher, who specialize in books by Pacific Northwest writers. look online...also, you can sometimes find used or remainered copies in an independent bookstore search on alibris, com (I used to recommend abebooks.com, and many indy booksellers list with both, but ABe was acquired by AMazon, com last eyar and I dont; buy from Amazon as they ahve made business surviva hellish for the independent book-istas.

anyway, SLipknot. I enjoyed it, Iv;e now read all three of te author;s novels, all about some aspect of the rock ' roll world and the BNnorthwest. he weaves a good tale, and this one ios intriguing. I found the style of writing a buit clumsy, tending toward purple prose inb some places and some of the characters a bit two-dimensional, but poart of the charm of gary kb Kinney is that despite a less than seamless fiction style, I find I am sucked into following where the characters' adventures will eald next.

the semi-hippie Deadhead turned sheriff is a believable and sympathetic character, evcen though his girlfriend could use some rounding-out. the conflict between environmentalists, big business interests, and tutal townspeople could be almost anywhere in the UD; I could easily see this story set in Mendocino County, Claifornia, rather than in the more northern woods of Washington State.

the story is set in 1993 or 1994, for good readon: the author wants to paint a rrural criminal investigation in fairly contemporary times, but before the World Wide Web, or computer technology in general in backwoods settings, was available., even to law enforcement.

I'd happily write a review if kearney St Books is sstill trying to promote this novel, or either of the two that preceded it.

      overall, a good read.
